DISC English Language Programme

Our English language programme is designed to develop confident, capable and enthusiastic English communicators. Through meaningful learning experiences, students develop the language skills they need not only for academic success, but also to express ideas, think critically, collaborate and communicate with confidence.

Two Learning Pathways

To ensure that students receive instruction appropriate to their current language needs, our English programme offers two learning pathways: Mainstream English and English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Mainstream (Advanced) English

Our Mainstream English Programme is guided by the IB Language Scope and Sequence and embraces an inquiry-driven approach to language learning.

English is viewed not simply as a subject to be studied, but as an essential language for learning, thinking and communicating. Students develop their reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing skills through authentic learning experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity and independent thought.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Our EAL Programme provides targeted language support for students who are developing their English proficiency. Learning experiences are structured to strengthen students‘ foundational language skills while gradually building the confidence and competence needed to participate successfully in an English-speaking learning environment.

Assessment for Growth

Student progress is supported through a combination of formative and summative assessment.

• Formative assessment is embedded throughout the learning process and includes authentic opportunities such as projects, oral presentations and performance-based tasks. These experiences allow students to demonstrate their learning in different ways while developing communication, collaboration and presentation skills.
• Summative assessment provides opportunities to evaluate students‘ progress and achievement against learning objectives.

In Grade 5, students also have the opportunity to showcase their learning through end-of-year exhibitions, bringing together the knowledge, skills and confidence they have developed throughout their learning journey.

Our students also have the opportunity to participate in the internationally recognised Cambridge English Young Learners (YLE) examinations, providing them with an opportunity to demonstrate their English skills within an international assessment framework.

English Across the Curriculum

For our Grade 5 students, Science is taught in English, providing an additional opportunity to develop academic vocabulary and communication skills while learning subject-specific content. This integration of language and content strengthens students‘ ability to use English as a genuine tool for learning.

Students also bring English to life through theatre and performance. Performing in English gives students an exciting opportunity to practise pronunciation, expression and communication while developing confidence in speaking before an audience.

Our Goal

We want our students to leave the classroom with more than knowledge of English. We want them to have the confidence to ask questions, share ideas, tell stories, perform, present, collaborate and use English meaningfully in the world around them.
